Synopsis
It is May 1940 and the government has just anounced the formation of the Local Defence Volenteers for able bodies men. But in one small town they don't have enough men so the women join in.The Cast List
- The Mayor:
- About 60. Served in WW1 with the Cheshire’s, rose to the rank of Major. Wounded at the Battle of the Somme and pulled to safety by Bill Brack. Still has the shrapnel in his body. Very ill wife.
- Bill Brack:
- 45 Lost his left arm on the Somme in 1917, invalided out. Owns the Ironmongers shop and runs it with his wife and daughter.
- Reginald Hurst:
- 56. Was in the pay corps during WW1. Never left Aldershot. A solicitor, moved to the town in 1929.
- Mike Riches:
- 41. Lied about his age and fought in WW1. Suffered a total breakdown during the battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Sent to a hospital near Edinburg. Kept in until 1920 when they sent him home. His mother found him in the middle of one night huddled in a corner of his bedroom screaming. She helped him get over it. Now a teacher at the junior school.
- Frank Adams:
- 35. Garage mechanic. Tried to join up in 1939 but failed the medical due to having Asthma.
- Stephen Cross:
- 45. Works for the council repairing the roads and hedging and ditching. Unable to join the regulars due to one leg being longer than the other.
- Margery Cessington-Smythe:
- 25 Daughter of the Squire. Large bosom. Hunting, shooting, fishing type. Father in the Air ministry, mother a hypochondriac.
- Sarah Cross:
- 22 Niece of Stephen. Helps out at the cottage hospital, cleaning and doing odd jobs, looks after the squire’s wife from time to time. Two brothers, one in the Army the other in the Navy.
- Patricia Clark nee Brack:
- 21. Daughter of Bill Brack. Married to Stuart who is in the RAF in France. Works in dad’s ironmongers shop.
- Sally Bridges:
- 45. Wife of cinema owner. Works as an usherette
